Account book (Contobuch) of a Berlin Jewish banking house for the years 1776-1787. Floral paper cover and 22 numbered double pages. Provenance: Paul Wallich. 6.800,00 EUR
Records were kept in Jewish-German, with most clients` names and certain other information in Latin script. Interleaved with a German translation prepared ca. 1936. The meticulous attention paid to the book at that date may have been prompted by the desire to provide work for the Jewish scholars who prepared the notes. Among the bank`s clients were Gebhard Werner Graf von der Schulenburg, a trove of whose correspondence recently came to light; other members of the nobility; ordinary Christians and Jews; and the Elders (Ältesten) of the Jewish community. Such documents must be of the utmost rarity. Also includes some genealogical research concerning Jewish clients of the bank. Wallich, who was baptized at birth, committed suicide in 1938 after Kristallnacht.

Sewn, top edge shaved close to text, else very good. 420,00 EUR
Followed by "Racones de la lealtad clausulas de la finesa en elogio de las hazanas, que en los diez anos del reynado del Chatholico Monarcha Philipo V. ... ha celebrado la Sta. Yglesia Cathedral Metropolitana de México." The first work consists of 16 pp., the second of 40 pp.; this collation of the first part, which is definitely complete, differs from those on WorldCat. Some library listings indicate a third part of 14 pp., not present in this copy. An attractive example of early Colonial Mexican printing. Ignacio de Castorena was a cleric and supporter of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, who had much trouble with the ecclesiastical authorities. He founded in 1722 the first, albeit short-lived, "newspaper" in Hispanic America, the Gazeta de México y Noticias de Nueva Espana.

Charpentier, Henri and Boyden Sparkes. Life à la Henri. Being the memoirs of Henri Charpentier. New York, Simon and Schuster, 1934. First edition. 180,00 EUR
Publisher`s file copy. Very good copy in dust jacket. Laid in are two small original photographs of Henri Charpentier in chef`s toque, taken during the time he operated a restaurant on Long Island, annotated on versos. Accompanied by the installments (lacking one installment) of the magazine appearance in the Saturday Evening Post in the same year. Charpentier rode the perhaps fabulous story of his invention of crepes Suzette to international fame.

Duncan, Isadora. The Dance. New York, The Forest Press, (1909). 4to. Boards with paste-on cover illustration. Good, spots of wear along spine. 850,00 EUR
Introduction by Mary Fanton Roberts, an editor and art-world figure. The text of a lecture by Duncan, "The Dance," follows, which previously appeared in English and German in the bilingual book "Die Tanz der Zukunft" (1903). The latter part of the book is devoted to two musical programs with the New York Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Walter Damrosch, in which she performed to the symphonic music. A program note by Felix Borowski for Gluck`s Iphigenia in Aulis concludes the book. This book was apparently meant to accompany the concerts. Illustrated with gravure plates. Rare, even more so than "Die Tanz der Zukunft," since it was prepared for a specific series of events rather than as a trade book.

Olympics - Daily program for the Berlin Olympics, 5. August 1936. 140,00 EUR
Results of some races were filled in by an American visitor to the Games, including Jesse Owen`s win in the semifinal heat of the 200 meter dash. Another African-American, Matthew Robinson, won the other heat and eventually finished second to Owens. Owens had already won the 100 meter and the long jump and his victories are listed among the winners in the rear of the program. Another African-American teammate, Frederick Pollard, Jr., also qualified in the semifinal of an event he eventually won, the 110 meter hurdles. To see these finishes, laden with political meaning, recorded on the day is outstanding.
