Cf. Gay/ Lemonnyer III, p.172 and Barbier III, 252. Collection of essays in letters by the author and philosopher Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, marquis d`Argens (1703-1771). Complete sets are very rare to find as the letters appeared over a period of more than 15 years. Especially the last parts (17-19) seem to be uncommon and missing to most copies we could trace. Here the third volume with letters 5 and 6 has unfortunately gone lost. - This set is from the library of the Marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764) the official chief mistress of Louis XV. Each volume shows her arms on both covers. The first endpaper of each volume has another engraved bookplate (by Agry) with different crowned arms. In 1757 the Marquise sold the Chateau de Crecy with all it contained and these volumes were most likely among that property. - Nice set, only minor browning, a little rubbed, one spine with a small wormhole.
