A detailed and attractively hand-colored map showing St. Petersburg at the dawn the Golden Age of Russian Poetry and of Alexander Pushkin; most likely engraved by Aleksandr D. Savinkov, one of the most accomplished map makers of his era. Early during his reign, Paul I reformed the cartographic production in the Russian Empire, creating the "Maps Depot" by decree in 1796, where cartographers such as Savinkov were employed. In their various states, Savinkov`s maps of St. Petersburg are less frequently found in the trade than Makhaev`s maps of the mid-to late eighteenth-century. With an index in Russian and French, detailing the various buildings, streets, and monuments. Even though, per the administrative partition of 1782, the city consisted of eleven districts, the Liteiny and Vyborgsky Districts are here listed separately. While the Napoleonic Wars interrupted many ongoing building projects, the period after 1812 was marked by swift changes resulting from the growing administrative apparatus, such as the creation of the State Council and various ministries. Savinkov`s map of St. Petersburg was first issued in 1810, and updated editions are known to have appeared in 1835 and 1838, though they were not signed by Savinkov. This 1819 edition-likewise unsigned, but very similar to both the earlier and the later editions-appears particularly uncommon. Not in Rovinskiy (Slovar graverov). Provenance: Reiss & Auvermann (1979); private collection.
