Hand-Colored Map of Pushkin`s St. Petersburg - Novyi plan stolichnogo goroda Sanktpeterburga [New plan of the capital city St. Petersburg, indicating the most important buildings, prospects and streets, alleys, squares, bridges, and barriers in Russian and French]. St. Petersburg, 1819. Original engraved map, measuring 61 × 92 cm, hand-colored. Dissected into eighteen segments and mounted on linen. Folds into the original paper-covered slipcase (21.5 × 17 cm), with printed label and price of 10 rubles. Slipcase with wear to edges; the map with occasional light toning along folds, but very good. 2.800,00 EUR
A detailed and attractively hand-colored map showing St. Petersburg at the dawn the Golden Age of Russian Poetry and of Alexander Pushkin; most likely engraved by Aleksandr D. Savinkov, one of the most accomplished map makers of his era. Early during his reign, Paul I reformed the cartographic production in the Russian Empire, creating the "Maps Depot" by decree in 1796, where cartographers such as Savinkov were employed. In their various states, Savinkov`s maps of St. Petersburg are less frequently found in the trade than Makhaev`s maps of the mid-to late eighteenth-century. With an index in Russian and French, detailing the various buildings, streets, and monuments. Even though, per the administrative partition of 1782, the city consisted of eleven districts, the Liteiny and Vyborgsky Districts are here listed separately. While the Napoleonic Wars interrupted many ongoing building projects, the period after 1812 was marked by swift changes resulting from the growing administrative apparatus, such as the creation of the State Council and various ministries. Savinkov`s map of St. Petersburg was first issued in 1810, and updated editions are known to have appeared in 1835 and 1838, though they were not signed by Savinkov. This 1819 edition-likewise unsigned, but very similar to both the earlier and the later editions-appears particularly uncommon. Not in Rovinskiy (Slovar graverov). Provenance: Reiss & Auvermann (1979); private collection.

First edition of the military and diplomatic campaign journals by Peter the Great, his lieutenants, and secretaries, which document the Russian war with Sweden and the legal and military development of the Russian Empire. They were to serve as the basis for any authoritative history of Petrine Russia and were compiled and edited by Peter himself, with the help of Aleksey Makarov and Petr Shapirov, but published at Catherine the Great`s behest after Peter`s death. She tasked the conservative statesman, writer, and thinker, Prince Mikhail Shcherbatov (1733-1790) with editing the work. Peter was highly invested in leaving detailed documentation on the Great Northern War (1700-1721), which led to Sweden`s defeat in the Baltic and established the Russian Empire as a major European political and military power. The journal describes in detail Peter`s strategy, the movement of troops, and the course of battles. It lists military equipment, details material losses, and provides lists of wounded and imprisoned soldiers and generals. Especially noteable is the lengthy description of the signing of the Treaty of Nystad and the ensuing celebrations, replete with fireworks and festive banquets. The Journal is supplemented with numerous documents taken from Peter`s Cabinet Archive and other state repositories. Among them are declarations on the unsuccessful 1710-1711 campaign against Ottoman forces, the account of Peter`s travels through Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and France in 1717, and Peter`s Manifesto about those responsible for the continuing war (1719). Most copies lack the second volume, which was published two years after the first; others have only the first part of volume two (up to p. 191). Our copy lacks only a part of the supplements and edicts. Still scarce in such a state of completion, with almost no auction records both in Russia and abroad. In 2007, the Mollo-Stroganov copy (containing volume 1 only) sold for 3000 GBP. One of 1200 copies. Bitovt 1683. Svodnyi katalog 2282. Sopikov 4096.

Döderlein, Johann Alexander. Sviatii Strastoterpets Khristov Feodor Stratiliat. Small quarto (20,5 x 17 cm). Contemporary colored-paper over boards; 142 pp. Folded engraving, measuring 50 × 42 cm, tipped in. Two private book plates; earlier signature to p. 133. Lower spine worn; binding lightly shaken, but still intact and internally very good. 1.600,00 EUR
The first Western monograph on a Russian artwork, the hagiographic icon of Theodor Stratilates, housed at the church in Kalbensteinberg, Germany. Long attributed to Novgorod-era masters, the icon is now generally thought to stem from the Pskov region, though its exact origin remains unclear: "Die Theodorus-Ikone aus dem Pskower Kunstkreis wurde zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts geschaffen. Es wird angenommen, dass das Bild von einem Mitglied der Familie Rieter von einer Reise oder einer Kriegsfahrt nach Russland oder Polen mitgebracht wurde. Wahrscheinlich war es Philipp Rieter (1566-1633 oder 1635)" (Dekanat Gunzenhausen). The large engraving of the icon shows the saint at the center, surrounded by twelve scenes from his life, which are explained by Döderlein, who interprets not only its iconography, but transcribes and translates the Slavonic inscriptions. Praising Peter the Great and Russia`s new-found fame abroad, he notes that the Empire`s earlier obscurity made him doubt that a Russian icon could be located in a German church at all. Ultimately, Döderlein achieves a remarkable feat of inter-cultural mediation: his work not only educates German readers about Russian art and religion, but makes the foreign icon useful for spiritual contemplation by local paritioners. The historian, philologist, and pedagogue Döderlein (1675-1745) was a major German polymath of the Baroque era and a member of Prussian Academy of Sciences. Cat. Russica D683.
